Kantara's Summer 2020 Collection of Moroccan Rugs

August 14, 2020

With Covid-19 closing borders for the foreseeable future, it's unclear when I'll return to Morocco. In this globalized age, it's a blessing that I am able to maintain regular contact with folks in Morocco, half a world away.

Throughout the pandemic, I've been slowly whittling away at the rugs I had in stock. Which is why I just placed an order of Moroccan rugs which should arrive by the end of August.

In this Summer collection, I'm bringing in more minimal, abstract Moroccan rugs. Think: modern white and black lines of the Beni Ourain rugs mixed with the free-wheeling black and white Azilal rugs.

No shipment of rugs from Morocco is complete without some of the more vibrant and colorful Moroccan rugs -- I've got those too.

Browse the catalog below, and continue reading to get a sneak peek of the rugs that I'm most excited about!

A modern Beni Mrirt that turns heads:

I love everything about this rug. The colors are bold yet balanced. The design is reminiscent of the diamond shapes in Beni Ourain rugs but with a modern twist. The weave style on this is also unique -- the orange lines are inset into the rug: a flatweave design detail set against a plush pile rug. This gives the rug a sleek architectural look and makes it truly one-of-a-kind.

Vintage Moroccan checkerboard rug for days:

This was clearly a well loved rug. Teal and salmon colors fade in and out of focus throughout the rug. It's a real tableau, one that is bordered by a rich purple fringe and if you look closely, accents of purple that run throughout the rug.

A Beni Ourain with a twist:

There's the quintessential Beni Ourain rug with its iconic black diamond shapes over a thick white pile rug. And then there's this rug. The more traditional middle section of this rug is bordered on the top and bottom by black and white flatweave Zanafi weavings that recall rugs from the High Atlas region in the south of Morocco. This rug is a one-of-a-kind nod to rug styles that combine the modern with the traditional.

An Ourika rug filled with colorful diamonds and lozenges

With these Ourika rugs, we find big, bold rug designs featured prominently on top of cozy, white backgrounds. Unlike the Beni Ourain rugs, these rugs give you a full spectrum of color to liven up any space. This rug stands out for various reasons: from the color choices, to the geometric symmetry, to the overall composition.

Another vintage beauty with checkerboard borders

An oldie but a beauty! If you can imagine it, at one point this rug was surely a bright red Moroccan rug. And yet, it's a reminder that these rugs are meant to fade and change as they age. Like a good bottle of wine, these rugs just get better with time. I love seeing these old rugs, stripped away from all of the bravado of their younger selves. And you can tell the bones are still good, the piece still resonates!
