Rug Care Guide for Moroccan Rugs

July 31, 2020

One of the main questions we get here at Kantara from our customers is: how do I take care of my Moroccan rug? With their unique designs, rich colors, and beautiful textures, we understand that it can be daunting to figure out how exactly to clean and maintain these one of a kind creations. But there's no need to worry! We have put together all the information you need to take care of your favorite rug.

The most straightforward method is the traditional Moroccan technique– hanging your rug to bake in the sun for a few hours, shaking out the dust and dirt before bringing it back into your home. This is the best method for consistent maintenance of your rug. But what about a more thorough cleaning to deal with that stubborn stain you’ve been ignoring, out of fear of messing up the rug? All of this information, and more, is detailed below in this one-stop rug care article.

Here are some primary things to consider when caring for your Moroccan rug:

What are Moroccan rugs made from?

The first step in understanding how to clean your Moroccan rug is understanding what they are made of. The standard Moroccan rug is made from wool, and some incorporate cotton and synthetic materials as well.

DO: Understand that since wool is the primary material that makes up Moroccan rugs, it is important to take special care in the cleaning process.

DON'T: Let this information scare you away from proper rug maintenance! Taking care of your Moroccan rug is easy to do once you have the proper information.

Can you wash Moroccan rugs?

The short answer is: yes, but be careful! While washing may seem like the only solution to rid your rug of any deep dirt or stains, it is important to follow proper washing techniques to prevent damage. When preparing to wash your Moroccan rug, it is important to remember the following:

DO: Get your rugs professionally cleaned at regular intervals - either once a year or every year and half, depending on need. Reach out to us if you have questions about reputable rug cleaning locations near you!

DON'T: Use any standard carpet cleaning solutions that are available in retail outlets. The chemicals are too harsh and may damage the wool fibers.

DO: Spot clean the small stains and test the area first to make sure the colors don't run.

DON'T: Put your rug in the washer/dryer, as that will shrink the rug and damage it beyond repair.

In the case of any deep damage, it is best to take it to the professionals to clean properly.

Can you vacuum a Moroccan rug?

Of course! Vacuuming is a great way to keep your rug looking great, as long as you do it the right way. When vacuuming your rug, keep in mind the following:

DO: Vacuum regularly to remove dirt and excess fuzz that may accumulate on the rugs surface.

DON'T: Use a vacuum with a rotating bristle brush, as this could cause serious damage.

DO: Vacuum with a stationary soft brush edge that will gently massage the pile. Consider flipping the rug over and vacuuming the underside of the rug as well.

DON'T: Overlook the option of getting your rug professionally vacuumed, washed, and cleaned. While consistent vacuuming is important for general maintenance, there may come a certain point when professional help is necessary.
