Overview:
This Boujad runner features a chain of diamonds stretching the entire length of the piece. While the design is mostly symmetrical from one side to the other, the weavers took some liberties with the colors and shapes of the diamonds. Most of the diamonds are red, however towards the top of the runner, we find two orange diamonds. We also find one white diamond that is a different shape than the others. This is common in Moroccan weaving. Often weavers will add inconsistencies to their rugs, based on a belief that 'only Allah is perfect.' These irregularities represent the artisans' attempts to confuse the evil eye and deflect the envy of the neighbors. Whether the inconsistencies in shape and color are because the weaver was ensuring the Baraka of the rug or simply because of the weaver's own creative impulse, the outcome is still captivating.

Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs. Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next. The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
