This Moroccan boucherouite rug is a contemporary piece, woven with colorful cotton fiber. The bulk of the design is made up of a hypnotic, checkered diamond pattern on top of a navy blue base.The contrast between the dark base of the rug and the colorful fibers that make up the diamond is notable. Boucherouites gained notoriety as rag rugs that used up leftover fibers and colors. They often feature a mixture of cotton, wool, and fabric. Rugs like this one that are made out of cotton are easier to clean than wool rugs. This makes them great rugs for kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms, or in households with pets and small children where spills and accidents might occur.

Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs. Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next. The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
