Overview:

This wide runner is woven in the boucherouite style using cotton, wool, and recycled materials. There's a lot to say about this piece! On the one hand, it has an unusual shape, where one end flares out a bit. At its narrowest, it measures 32" across and at its widest, it measures 36". It is common to find size variations in older, vintage rugs that were woven on wooden looms. On the part that flares out, we're also drawn to the color change-- all of a sudden, the red base of the rug gives way to a yellow background color and at the part where the two colors meet, the design changes abruptly.

To the outside eye, this may look like a grave error. It could have been that the artisans set out to weave one rug, and then changed her mind a few inches into it. Or it could be an example of how artisans weave inconsistencies into the rug on purpose. Weavers will do this as a way to ward off the evil eye. This is based on the notion that only Allah is perfect and in order to avoid the envy of their neighbors, they will intentionally weave "errors" into the rug. At the end of the day, we welcome these touches of the artisan's creativity, knowing that it just adds to the charm of the rug!

The final part of this rug that calls our attention is the human figure in the middle, above the hand symbol. Figural representation is rare in Islamic art, and we absolutely love it whenever we find them hidden in Moroccan rugs!

How we measure the rugs:

All rug measurements listed on our site refer to the woven area only. They do not include the fringe. If you need the full length including fringe for a tight space or exact fit, just reach out and we’ll be happy to provide that measurement.

Because each rug is handwoven, slight variations are part of the charm. Some rugs may not be perfectly rectangular and can be slightly wider or narrower at one end. If a rug varies more than 4" across its width or length, we’ll note it in the product description. Anything under 4" is considered a normal allowance for handcrafted pieces like these.

A note on color:

We’ve made every effort to accurately represent the colors within the rugs, but the colors displayed may vary slightly from the actual piece. The appearance of colors can be influenced by various factors, including monitor calibration, brightness, and other settings. Each screen displays colors differently, and everyone perceives colors uniquely. If precise color matching is critical, please reach out for further information!

Rug Care and Cleaning

How do I care for my rug?

The simplest, time-tested method is straight from Morocco: hang your rug in the sun for a few hours, then shake it out well before bringing it back inside. This regular airing out is the best way to keep your rug fresh and dust-free. Beyond that, care depends on the rug’s material and construction. For instance cotton boucherouites are the easiest to clean - just throw them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and air dry. Longer pile rugs should be vacuumed with care. Be sure to turn off the rotating brush or switch to the “carpet” setting before vacuuming the top side. For more information click here

How do I clean a rug after a spill or stain?

For stains or heavy dirt, we recommend professional cleaning, especially if the rug is wool or vintage. Most rug cleaning services charge around $5–6 per square foot.

Regular cleaning not only removes dust embedded in the fibers, but also helps extend the life of your rug. Think of it as a check-up– occasional care now can help preserve it for decades to come.

What else can I do to extend the life of my rug?

We recommend using a rug pad. It adds cushioning, prevents slipping, and reduces wear on both the rug and your floors. It's one of the simplest ways to protect your investment. For more about rug pads, see below.

We recommend using a rug pad with all Moroccan rugs. Rug pads help extend the life of your rug, prevent slipping, and add extra cushioning underfoot.

We offer high-quality rug pads cut to standard sizes, with custom sizing available upon request. Our premium pads are suitable for most floor types and cost around $3 per square foot. Reach out to get a quote or place an order.
