Overview:
This vintage Moroccan boucherouite rug has a bright red base underneath an intersecting grid of navy and sky blue lines. Technically it's a handknotted rug, but the cotton fiber has worn down over time, giving it the feel of a flatweave rug. In some areas you can see the filler weave peaking through. A lot of the filler weave is actually made with recycled clothing and textiles. If you look closely, especially on the backside, you might be able to see some of the textiles poking through. That's one reason the underside of this rug is quite different from the top side. Moroccans will use both sides of the rug, switching it up throughout the year and depending upon the occasion. With older, handwoven rugs, the sizing sometimes varies (plus or minus) a few inches on either side. At its narrowest width, this rug measures 2' 9" across, and at its widest it measures 3' 3".

Kantara, meaning "bridge" in Arabic, is deeply committed to fair and ethical trade. Since 2008, we have worked directly with the same weaving cooperatives in rural Morocco. Thanks to our longstanding relationship with these highly skilled Moroccan artisans, we are able to curate and design authentic rugs and pillows that both preserve the ancient weaving traditions and add a modern touch.
Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs. Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next. The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
We carry a wide variety of rugs. There are rugs from popular design styles such as Beni Ouarain, boucherouite, and Azilal. We also curate bold and eclectic Moroccan rugs that seemingly have no rhyme or reason. These fully functional art pieces come together to form a collection that is a healthy balance of traditional Moroccan rugs and unique, one-of-a-kind finds. All of our rugs are washed by professional cleaners before being shipped to Kantara's Los Angeles showroom.
