Overview:
This one-of-a-kind Akhanif Moroccan flatweave rug features an asymmetrical, geometric design in shades of oatmeal white and maroon. The maroon background shape includes a lighter colored pink that darts its way through the entire shape. This lends the maroon section an almost ethereal quality as it fluctuates through darker shades and unique shapes. On top of the background colors we find intricately embroidered diamond-shaped details in shades of dark red and brown. With its unique style and muted colors, this Moroccan area rug would be the perfect statement piece for a modern space.
This Akhanif rug is a custom Kantara creation woven by our artisan partners in the South of Morocco. It's a thinner flatweave that is available to custom weave in any size or color way.

Kantara, meaning "bridge" in Arabic, is deeply committed to fair and ethical trade. Since 2008, we have worked directly with the same weaving cooperatives in rural Morocco. Thanks to our longstanding relationship with these highly skilled Moroccan artisans, we are able to curate and design authentic rugs and pillows that both preserve the ancient weaving traditions and add a modern touch.
Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs. Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next. The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
