This modern Zanafi rug was made by our artisan partners in the south of Morocco. Contemporary Zanafi rugs feature a thicker, more durable geometric weave. Where you might have only found small banded sections of black and white Zanafi weaving in older rugs, modern Zanafi rugs appear in many different colors, like this baby blue rug. This rug is reversible, with the inverse image of the design reflected on the underside of the rug. The two sides are almost identical. The difference between the top and bottom side is most visible with rugs that feature larger design and higher contrast colors. With Zanafi rugs, you get to choose which side you like best at any given point in time. Scroll through the photos to see if you can spot the differences. Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs. Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next. The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
