Overview:

This Moroccan area rug in an Yves Klein blue is the outcome of our latest experiment with overdyes. We worked wtih a local rug cleaner, who is truly a rug doctor extraordinaire. He has a soft spot for overdyeing rugs. And we had a few rugs in our collection that we wanted to give new life to, in the form of this painterly process.

We chose this rug and two others to receive the overdye treatment, each one specializing in a different color way. We call this one the Ocean rug. On it's surface the rug appears in the richest of cobalt blues. Hidden within its depths, though, you get hints of the other colors that came before -- most notably fluorescent teal, neon pink, and white. Run your hands through the long pile of this rug and you are privy to all the secret colors contained within this rug. When you're done, pat it down, and the rug returns to its royal blue canvas.

We've been working with Moroccan artisans since 2008

Kantara, meaning "bridge" in Arabic, is deeply committed to fair and ethical trade.

Since 2008, we have worked directly with the same weaving cooperatives in rural Morocco. Thanks to our longstanding relationship with these highly skilled Moroccan artisans, we are able to curate and design authentic rugs and pillows that both preserve the ancient weaving traditions and add a modern touch.

This is why we love Moroccan rugs

Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs.

Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next.

The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.

About our collection of custom, handwoven, and vintage Moroccan rugs

We carry a wide variety of rugs. There are rugs from popular design styles such as Beni Ouarain, boucherouite, and Azilal. We also curate bold and eclectic Moroccan rugs that seemingly have no rhyme or reason. These fully functional art pieces come together to form a collection that is a healthy balance of traditional Moroccan rugs and unique, one-of-a-kind finds.

All of our rugs are washed by professional cleaners before being shipped to Kantara's Los Angeles showroom.

Love my Kantara Rug!

Alia was a pleasure to work with. Everything went smoothly- from the initial consultation to the shipping and delivery. The rug is gorgeous, unique, and well-crafted. I feel good about supporting gifted artisans working in their independent, self-run businesses.

Shawn, I'm glad to hear you were pleased with the consult, shipping, delivery, and craftsmanship of the rug! This one, specifically, was a labor of love, from when I first designed it and worked with the artisans to get just the right colors for it. I hope this rug brings you endless amounts of enjoyment!

cheers,
Alia
