Why Choose custom?

If you love what you see but can’t find the right size or color, a custom rug is the perfect solution. We have spent years collaborating with women’s weaving cooperatives across Morocco to bring unique designs to life.

Each rug is handwoven by master artisans in the Atlas Mountains who skillfully interpret your design, adjusting scale, color palette, and pattern to suit the final rug size.

This process allows you to create a one-of-a-kind piece that reflects your style, while directly supporting fair-trade practices and the continuation of Morocco’s rich weaving traditions.

OUR EXPERTISE & CRAFT

For over a decade, we’ve partnered directly with weaving cooperatives across Morocco to produce rugs that honor traditional methods while meeting modern design standards. Each piece is handwoven by artisans whose skills are rooted in the unique weaving traditions of their tribes and villages, passed down through generations of women weavers.

From the first sketch to the final weave, we focus on quality, fair compensation, and the preservation of Morocco’s vibrant weaving tradition. It’s this foundation of trust and expertise that allows us to facilitate a cross-cultural conversation between you and the artisans, translating your design ideas into handwoven works of art that are timeless, enduring, and deeply connected to place.

After washing, stretching, and finishing the rug, your piece is ready to leave Morocco. It'll first be sent to our showroom in LA for a final quality control check before we mail it off to you. A final balance payment is due before delivery.

OUR CUSTOM DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

We see the custom rug process as a dialogue. A form of cross-cultural communication expressed through weaving, color, and design. Each piece begins as your vision and takes form through the hands of master Amazigh women who carry forward a centuries-old folk art tradition.

When you commission a custom rug, you’re not simply designing an object, you’re participating in a living artistic exchange with artisans halfway around the world.

AVAILABLE SPECIFICATIONS

Every tribal region in Morocco has its own distinct weaving style. For over a decade, we’ve worked with artisans throughout the Atlas Mountains who are highly skilled in weaving the many regional styles of Moroccan rugs.

If you’re still in the early stages of developing your design, we encourage you to scroll through this section and explore some of the questions that can help clarify your vision. The more we understand your preferences for design, color, and texture, the better we can match you with the weaving cooperative best suited to bring your rug to life.

Design Considerations

Depending on the tribal region, Moroccan rugs can range from bold and abstract to tight and geometric. Some feature tessellating patterns that repeat across the rug; others are entirely one-of-a-kind. This diversity reflects the incredible range of Morocco’s weaving traditions and the creative expression of its artisans.

Questions to help you define your rug style:

  • Do you want a symmetrical or asymmetrical design?
  • Do you prefer abstract or structured patterns?
  • Are you drawn to tessellating or repeating motifs?
  • Do you like geometric elements in your rugs?
  • Do you like rugs with a central medallion or a more all-over design?
  • What overall feeling do you want the rug to bring to your space (formal, relaxed, bold, minimal)?

For inspiration, explore the Shop and Rug Styles menus to see the full range of designs we carry. Or reach out for a consult — we’re happy to guide you toward the right direction.

Once you have a sense of style, you can start refining by color and texture.

Texture and Pile

Moroccan rugs can be flatwoven, handknotted, or a mix of both. Flatweave rugs have no pile and lie flat on the floor, making them ideal for high-traffic areas like dining rooms or living spaces that need easy cleaning and durability.

Handknotted rugs, on the other hand, have a pile — the raised surface created by each knotted strand of wool. Rug pile refers to the thickness of the rug. High-pile rugs have a fluffier, more luxurious texture, while low-pile rugs are trimmed after weaving for a smoother, denser finish.

Questions to help you decide on texture and pile:

  • Is your space large or small?
  • Will the rug sit under furniture or be a central focal point?
  • Are you concerned about door clearance?
  • Do you want a rug that’s easy to clean and vacuum?
  • Do you plan to sit, play, or lounge on it?

For inspiration, explore the Shop and Rug Styles menus
for the following types of rugs, sorted by pile height:

1. Flatweaves (Zanafi, Akhnif, Kharita, Middle Atlas styles);
2. Short-pile handknotted rugs (Boujad, High Atlas styles); and
3. High-pile rugs (Beni Mrirt, Beni Ourain, Azilal styles)

Color Considerations

Traditionally, Moroccan rugs were dyed with plant-based pigments or they were made with undyed natural wool. Today, most weavers use commercially dyed wool, sourced from local souks, though some still work with natural or undyed sheep’s wool. This is especially true with Beni Ourain and Azilal rugs.

Questions to help you decide on color:

  • Do you want natural tones or dyed wool?
  • Is color matching critical to your design, or are small variations in color okay?
  • Are you drawn to neutral palettes or bold statements?
  • What kind of floors do you have and what color are they?
  • What palette is the rest of the decor in your home? (jewel-toned, neutral, primary colors, etc)
  • What kind of feeling do you want to get from the rug (calming, energizing, complimentary to other decor, etc)

Color is often the hardest aspect to match exactly. Some weaving cooperatives are more precise than others, so if color fidelity matters most, let us know so we can pair you with the right group of artisans in Morocco.

Size and Shape

Anyone who has searched for oversized Moroccan rugs knows how rare they are to find. Traditional vintage rugs were woven long and narrow due to loom limitations and the layout of Moroccan homes.

With our custom program, size is no longer a constraint. We can scale any design to your exact dimensions — large or small, wide or narrow.

Questions to help you determine rug size:

  • Where will the rug be placed? (Living room, bedroom, hallway, etc.)
  • How large is the space? Does it have high ceilings or natural light?
  • Should the rug extend under the furniture or sit in front of it?
  • Does your furniture sit directly on the floor or have legs?
  • Are there doors that swing into the room and might catch the rug?
  • How much of the floor would you like covered?

If you’re unsure, send us photos or measurements of your space — we’ll help you find the perfect proportions.

Fringe, Material, and Finish

The small details make a big difference. Traditional Moroccan rugs typically have fringe on one end only, but custom rugs can be finished in many ways to fit your space.

Questions to help you choose finishing details:

  • Do you want fringe on one side, both sides, or none?
  • What type of fringe do you like: braided, twisted, knotted, or loose?
  • Would you like a stylized border before the fringe?
  • Do you have a material preference (wool, cotton, or blend)?
  • Do you want the rug to feel rustic and hand-finished, or more polished?

Every detail shapes the final look of your rug, from the fringe to the finish. Once you’ve explored design, size, texture, color, and material, you’ll have a clear vision. And we'll help communication that design to the artisans.

Designing a custom rug is an art of collaboration between you, our team, and the artisans in Morocco. We’ll guide you through every step of the process and match you with the artisans best suited for your project.

Custom Beni Ourain rug

"I am beyond thrilled with my new rug from Kantara. I wanted a rug for my study and the color and sizes of the rugs on the website did not fit the space and color scheme of the room. I worked with Alia at Kantara who used photos of the room to help me design just the right rug for the area. The computer-generated designs she used made the process so easy as I could envision the rug in the space. Alia kept in touch so I knew when the rug would arrive and it looks even better than I'd hoped for. Highly recommend!"

Akhnif Moroccan Rugs

Originating in Morocco’s Siroua region of the High Atlas Mountains, Akhnif rugs are known for their embroidered motifs set atop a flatweave base. From a distance, the designs may appear woven, but a closer look reveals intricate embroidery in many different colors.

Pink and white Moroccan Azilal area rug

Azilal Moroccan Rugs

From the High Atlas, Azilal rugs feature expressive, abstract designs. Vintage versions have a soft, long pile in natural tones, while contemporary styles are more tightly woven, with a short-cut pile, and playful color palettes. The newer ones are made from a mix of wool and cotton fibers.

Beni Mrirt Moroccan Rugs

Beni Mrirt Moroccan Rugs

Beni Mrirt rugs are made in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains and are among the most luxurious of rug styles. The rug is densely woven, made from some of the best sheep’s wool in Morocco. Each Beni Mrirt rugs goes through an extensive washing process, which results in the rug’s plush feel underfoot.

Black and white Moroccan diamond Beni Ourain style rug

Beni Ourain Moroccan Rugs

These iconic black-and-white rugs are known for their minimalist, geometric designs. Originally woven by Amazigh tribes near Fes, Beni Ourain rugs pair tradition with timeless style. Contemporary versions explore new combinations of base color, line color, and pile height, while staying true to the creative spirit of the originals.

Boujad Moroccan Rugs

Boujad Moroccan Rugs

Woven in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains, Boujad rugs are known for their bold use of color, abstract patterns, and shape-driven design. No two are alike, but all share a dynamic, expressive style that reflects the creativity of the women who weave them.

All of these rugs are available to be reordered to your specific size and color needs.

Glaoui style medium sized Moroccan berber carpet

Glaoui Moroccan Rugs

Named after the Glaoui tribe that once ruled southern Morocco, these rugs reflect the rich history of the Trans-Saharan trade routes. Glaoui rugs are distinctive for combining three weaving techniques in a single piece: flatweave sections, hand-knotted areas, and black-and-white Zanafi bands that tuft out from the sides.

Moroccan flatweave kilim area rug in reds, oranges, and yellows

Kharita Moroccan Rugs

Kharita means map in Arabic, and it is said that these rugs represent a map of the land. Woven by the Ait Ouaghda tribe, Kharita rugs are technically complex, producing a fully reversible rug. The rugs feature organic, wavy lines, which is rare to find in other Moroccan weaving styles.

Bright red Moroccan flatweave kilim from the Middle Atlas mountains

Middle Atlas Moroccan Rugs

Middle Atlas rugs are intricate kilims known for their symmetrical, geometric patterns. Our collection includes colorful Zemmouri rugs and the neutral Tifelt style, both featuring tightly-woven, banded designs. We work with artisan partners in the Morocco that can replicate these rugs, changing colors, designs, and size of the rug.

Moroccan boucherouite rag rug made with colorful tufted cotton in traditional Berber rug style

Moroccan Boucherouite Rugs

Moroccan boucherouite rugs were traditionally made from clothing, cut into strips, and knotted into rugs. Nowadays, they’re also made from cotton fibers. Since very few of these rugs are made with wool, they’re easy to clean in the washing machine, making them ideal for homes with small kids and pets.

Tifelt Moroccan Rugs

Tifelt Moroccan Rugs

These rugs are woven in Morocco's Middle Atlas. They feature tightly woven, banded designs with neutral color palettes. These rugs are among the most intricate of flatweave rugs making them difficult to replicate. We love this style because it fits in seamlessly into most decor styles. In this collection, we have a mix of contemporary Tifelt rugs and vintage rugs.

Blue geometric Moroccan Zanafi area rug

Zanafi Moroccan Rugs

Zanafi rugs are fully reversible and defined by their bold geometric designs and durable flatweave structure. This is a new weave style, derived from traditional Glaoui rugs. Zanafi rugs are highly customizable. We partner with skilled weavers who can adjust the colors, patterns, and dimensions  as needed.
