Kantara, meaning "bridge" in Arabic, is deeply committed to fair and ethical trade.
Since 2008, we have worked directly with the same weaving cooperatives in rural Morocco. Thanks to our longstanding relationship with these highly skilled Moroccan artisans, we are able to curate and design authentic rugs and pillows that both preserve the ancient weaving traditions and add a modern touch.
Moroccan rugs are heirloom pieces that age well and are embedded with the living histories of the weavers, the symbols of their tribal regions, and the markings of both traditional and modern rug designs.
Each tribal region in Morocco boasts its own weaving style- from modern black and white Beni Ourain rugs in the north, to the colorful and abstract Azilal high pile rugs, to the low pile rugs of the southern Ait Ouaouzguite region. While the process of weaving is the same throughout Morocco, the colors, textures, and patterns vary greatly from one region to the next.
The artisans we work with are skilled at creating hand-knotted, thicker pile rugs, as well as weaving geometric Moroccan kilims, boucherouite rag rugs, and double-sided handira wedding blankets. The results of this are colorful, eclectic, and bohemian rugs that are perfect for any home — from throw rugs to hallway runners to area living room rugs.
We carry a wide variety of rugs. There are rugs from popular design styles such as Beni Ouarain, boucherouite, and Azilal. We also curate bold and eclectic Moroccan rugs that seemingly have no rhyme or reason. These fully functional art pieces come together to form a collection that is a healthy balance of traditional Moroccan rugs and unique, one-of-a-kind finds.
All of our rugs are washed by professional cleaners before being shipped to Kantara's Los Angeles showroom.
Cleaning your Moroccan rug should not be a daunting task! The simplest and most effective method for routine rug maintenance is to follow the traditional Moroccan technique– hanging your rug to bake in the sun for a few hours, shaking out the dust and dirt before bringing it back into your home. Vacuuming and washing are also options for a deeper clean of your rug, but be careful! Any harsh techniques or products might damage the rugs fibers and/or dyes. In short -- no! But you can custom order a rug with Kantara. The lead time is usually 8-10 weeks from when the artisans receive the final design.
The longer answer is that widths of Moroccan rugs are determined by the size of the loom, which is attached to an empty wall in the home or within the weaving cooperative. As a result, the size of the rug is usually determined by the length of the largest wall space. This often constrains vintage Moroccan rugs to widths that are smaller than six feet, or two meters. Length is never an issue, which often results in narrow, yet long, vintage rugs.

With custom orders, we can recreate rug designs from Kantara's collection, or design a new rug based on your color and size preferences. Read more about the custom design process here.
