Phrases - Makaynsh

Ma'kayn'sh... ماكينش

Most expats will agree that Kayn and Ma'kayn'sh are two of the first words that you learn when you come to Morocco; Kayn, meaning “there are” and Ma'kayn'sh , the negative, meaning “there are not.” This is oftentimes a useful phrase to use at the hanout, or corner grocery store as you ask if there’s any bread… “Kayn al’khubz?” to be answered, “La, makaynsh.”—no, there is not.
